How big is your septic tank?
There's no single answer to how often a septic tank needs pumping. The EPA says the average household system should be inspected at least every three years and that household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. The practical interval depends on household size, wastewater volume, solids, and tank size. The calculator turns three of those inputs into a planning window; it does not inspect or diagnose the system.
Routine inspection and pumping can help protect the drain field from solids that should remain in the tank. If you have slow drains, sewage odor, an alarm, surfacing wastewater, or unusually wet ground near the system, stop using the calculator and call for an assessment.
Estimated Years Between Pumping
These are standard estimates for years between pump-outs by tank size and household. The calculator uses the same data, then factors in when you last pumped to give you a target month.
| Tank Size | 1 person | 2 people | 3 people | 4 people | 6 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 750 gal | 9.1 yr | 4.2 yr | 2.6 yr | 1.8 yr | 1.0 yr |
| 1,000 gal | 12.4 yr | 5.9 yr | 3.7 yr | 2.6 yr | 1.5 yr |
| 1,250 gal | 15.6 yr | 7.5 yr | 4.8 yr | 3.4 yr | 2.0 yr |
| 1,500 gal | 18.9 yr | 9.1 yr | 5.9 yr | 4.2 yr | 2.6 yr |
Heavy water use, a garbage disposal, or a water softener draining to the tank all shorten these intervals — pump on the earlier end if that's you.
